Dress Rehearsals

Dress Rehearsals

This memoir tells three stories: the story of how a high school nerd obsessed by numbers and the stars, who in 1957 became a freshman at the California Institute of Technology, published a number theory paper as a sophomore, and seemed destined for a career in mathematics, came to choose a career in creative writing instead; the story of why he stayed a writer despite modest success that fell far short of his ambition; and finally the story of how he became sober after over thirty years of abusing alcohol. They are my stories. —Charles Deemer
